Anger Management Treatment

Support that gives teens the tools to keep anger from disrupting their daily lives.

Structured Care for Teens Struggling With Anger

Anger is part of being human, especially during the teen years. For some teens, it goes beyond everyday frustration and begins to affect school, home, and relationships.

We focus on what your teen is feeling beneath the anger, what’s triggering it, and what support will help them handle intense emotions with more control. Then, we carve out a healthier path forward.

Common Anger-Related Symptoms We Treat

We provide treatment for a range of anger-related challenges, including:

  • Frequent anger outbursts or explosive reactions
  • Ongoing irritability or frustration
  • Difficulty managing conflict with family or peers
  • Impulsive behavior when upset
  • Trouble calming down after becoming angry

How Anger Management Helps Teens Manage Emotions

Helps Catch Anger Early

Teens learn how to notice the build-up before it turns into an outburst, so they have a real chance to pause and reset.

Manages Conflict Healthily

Practice communicating during disagreements, setting boundaries, and dealing with disappointment.

Pauses Between Feeling and Reacting

Treatment helps teens slow down impulsive reactions and choose a response that won’t make the situation worse.

With the right tools and support, anger becomes less disruptive at home, at school, and in relationships.

Therapies We Use in Our Anger Management Program

Anger in teens can be complex. Sometimes it’s tied to stress, anxiety, depression, trauma, ADHD, family conflict, or feeling overwhelmed and unheard. That’s why treatment isn’t one-size-fits-all or focused on a single method.

Each therapy we use plays a role, helping teens recognize triggers, manage impulses, and build healthier ways to handle frustration and conflict.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

Helps teens identify thoughts that fuel anger and practice more balanced, effective responses.

Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT)

Builds skills for emotional regulation, distress tolerance, and impulse control during intense moments.

Individual Therapy

Gives teens a private space to explore triggers, underlying emotions, and personal goals.

Group Therapy

Helps teens practice coping and communication skills with peer support in a structured setting.

Family Therapy

Improves communication at home and helps families set boundaries and routines that reduce escalation.

Relationship Therapy

Strengthens communication and boundaries in key relationships that may trigger anger or conflict.

Holistic Therapy

Supports regulation and grounding through mind-body practices that help teens reset and calm their nervous system.

Find the Right Level of Anger Management Treatment

Anger can look different over time, and the right level of care should adapt as your teen’s needs change. Care can step up when anger feels harder to control and step back as your teen learns to handle it more calmly.

Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

After-school care 3 days a week, 3 hours a day for teens who need more structure than weekly therapy provides. Programs typically run 8–12 weeks and include individual, group, and family therapy.

Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)

Day treatment Monday–Friday, 6+ hours a day for teens who need a higher level of support for their symptoms. This 4–6 week program includes school coordination and medication support as needed.

Virtual Programs

Online treatment is available as needed for teens who can’t attend in person. In some states, care may be hybrid. Offers structured, clinician-led support from home.

FAQs About Anger Management Treatment for Teens

How common are anger issues in teens?

Anger issues are more common in teens than many people realize. A study conducted by Harvard Medical School found that nearly two-thirds of U.S. adolescents have experienced an anger episode that included threatening behavior, property damage, or aggression toward others.

That said, having one of these episodes isn’t the same as having an ongoing anger disorder. What matters most is the pattern — how often it happens, how intense it gets, and whether it keeps causing problems at home, at school, or in relationships.

What causes anger issues in teens?

There are various reasons why teens may have anger issues. Some common causes include:

  • Mental health disorders such as depression, anxiety, or ADHD
  • Difficulty managing stress and strong emotions
  • Lack of practical communication skills
  • Traumatic experiences or past trauma
  • Family or relationship conflicts

Regardless of the underlying cause, our anger management program is designed to discover what is fueling the anger, address these issues, and help teens develop healthy coping mechanisms.

How do I know if a teen needs professional anger management treatment?

If anger is starting to affect relationships, school performance, or daily life, a structured treatment program can help teens learn healthier ways to manage their emotions.

Signs that professional support may be needed include regular outbursts, aggressive behavior, property damage, ongoing conflict at home or school, or trouble calming down after becoming upset.

What if my teen doesn’t want treatment?

It’s common for teens to feel hesitant about treatment at first. Many worry about being judged, misunderstood, or forced to talk before they feel ready.

A supportive program focuses on building trust and helping teens feel comfortable over time. Once teens begin learning practical tools to manage stress and anger, many become more open to the process and start to see the benefits of having a space where they can talk honestly and learn new skills.
