Depression Treatment

Support for teens who feel stuck, withdrawn, or overwhelmed and need a way forward.

Specialized Care for
Teens Struggling with Depression

Depression in teens often shows up as more than sadness. It can affect motivation, energy, relationships, school performance, and how a teen sees themselves.

That’s why our approach looks at the full picture: what your teen is experiencing internally, what’s happening around them, and what support will help them regain stability and confidence.

Common Symptoms We Treat

We provide treatment for a range of depression-related challenges, including:

  • Persistent sadness or low mood
  • Loss of interest in activities or relationships
  • Fatigue, low motivation, or withdrawal
  • Changes in sleep, appetite, or routines
  • Feelings of worthlessness or hopelessness

Therapies We Use to Treat Teen Depression

Depression in teens can be layered, shaped by emotions, experiences, relationships, and daily pressures. That’s why treatment isn’t one-size-fits-all or focused on a single method.

Each therapy we use plays a role, helping teens understand what they’re feeling, build coping skills, and regain a sense of stability and confidence in daily life.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

Helps teens recognize unhelpful thought patterns and respond in healthier ways.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)

Teaches skills to manage intense emotions and reduce overwhelm.

Individual Therapy

Gives teens a private space to work through emotions and goals one-on-one.

Group Therapy

Builds connection and coping skills with peers facing similar struggles.

Family Therapy

Improves communication at home and strengthens support systems.

Relationship Therapy

Helps teens build healthier boundaries and communication in key relationships.

Holistic Therapy

Supports regulation and grounding through mind-body practices.

Find the Right Level of Depression Treatment

Depression can look different over time, and the right level of care should adapt as your teen’s needs change. We offer different levels of support so care can step up during harder periods or ease back as mood and daily functioning improve.

Intensive Outpatient
Program (IOP)

After-school care 3 days a week, 3 hours a day for teens who need more structure than weekly therapy provides. Programs typically run 8–12 weeks and include individual, group, and family therapy.

Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)

Day treatment Monday–Friday, 6+ hours a day for teens who need a higher level of support for depression symptoms. This 4–6 week program includes school coordination and medication support as needed.

Virtual Mental Health Programs

Online depression treatment for teens who can’t attend in person. In some states, care may be hybrid. Offers structured, clinician-led support from home.

FAQs About Depression Treatment for Teens

How common is depression in teens?

Mental Health America estimates 3.1 million youth ages 12–17 experience periods of major depression. It’s often overlooked because depression in teens doesn’t always look dramatic or obvious, and symptoms can blend into typical adolescent behavior. Subtle, ongoing changes in mood, motivation, or energy are easy to miss until they start affecting daily life.

What causes depression in teens?

Teen depression usually comes from a mix of factors, not one single event. It can be influenced by brain chemistry, genetics, stress, trauma, family dynamics, social pressure, sleep disruption, or major life changes. Sometimes it builds gradually until a teen starts to lose motivation, pull away from others, or struggle with daily routines.

How do I know if a teen needs professional depression treatment?

A good rule of thumb is to look at how much depression is affecting your teen’s ability to function day to day. If mood changes, low motivation, withdrawal, or hopelessness start to interfere with school, relationships, routines, or safety, professional support can help. There are also different levels of care, so your teen can get the amount of support that fits their needs right now.

What if my teen doesn’t want treatment?

This is very common, especially if your teen feels overwhelmed, embarrassed, or unsure what treatment will be like. The goal isn’t to force your teen into something; it’s to help them feel safe enough to try.

It helps to frame treatment as getting support, not a punishment, and to reinforce that needing help isn’t something to be ashamed of. Our team works with hesitant teens by focusing on trust, clear expectations, and small first steps, so participation can build over time.
